Memory.
Think about the operations you perform on your computer, for example, editing a document, loading applications or just browsing the internet. The speed and performance at which these operations are carried out depends on the amount of memory installed on your computer.
Memory is comprised of "random access memory" (RAM) chips. This kind of memory is volatile storage, which means that when you turn the computer off, the data disappears.
More memory allows you to use a greater number of complex programs. For example, a game hosting company will need more memory in order to host several hundred game servers. However, a small businesses website may not require as much.
Storage.
Storage allows you to store and access data on a long-term basis. It houses your applications, operating system and files for an indefinite period. It holds items that need to be stored, but are not necessarily needed for immediate access. Typically, storage comes in the form of a solid-state or hard drive. Storage drives are non-volatile, meaning the data is stored even if you turn off your computer (unlike memory).
The amount of storage space you require depends on what operating system you use and what you're using the server to accomplish. There are various storage options available to choose from for dedicated and cloud servers. With a cloud server, you don't need to worry so much about choosing the perfect drive storage as you can always increase your storage plan. However, with a dedicated server, you'll need to think more about long term storage needs as it's not as easy to add drives.
Upgrading your Memory and Storage.
If your system seems slower or more unresponsive compared to when you first bought it, you most likely need to upgrade either your memory or storage, or perhaps even both, for optimal performance gains.
